Sevilla vs Valencia Preview
There’s a heavyweight clash in the Copa del Rey last 16 as Sevilla and Valencia clash at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. While the visitors haven’t exactly played like the major force they invariably have been in Spanish football, this is still a meeting between two clubs who have won the trophy 13 times between them and with the Madrid teams already out, there’s certainly a chance that tally could increase this year.
Sevilla are clearly the more likely to get their hands on the trophy and they are surely now the second favourites to win it after Barcelona. The Copa could become a real target for Julen Lopetegui this term and they probably do have the squad to sustain a decent cup run whilst also holding onto a top four position in LaLiga.
The biggest positive so far this month, is that they finally have a striker that is scoring goals, and lots of them. Youssef En-Nesyri has fired in two hat-tricks so far in January, to catapult his way to the top of the goalscoring charts in LaLiga. The latest came in a 3-0 win over Cadiz in January and their attacking options are set to be bolstered this week by the likely arrival of the talented Papu Gomez from Atalanta.
As for Valencia, they may be more focused on trying to merely stay in LaLiga right now, but a few positive cup results would help improve morale. Despite taking the lead at the Wanda Metropolitano at the weekend, they ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against Atletico Madrid and they continue to look quite a fragile side, and one that may well end up at least being involved in the relegation scrap.
The Copa del Rey has so far served as something of a welcome distraction from their league woes. They’ve secured relatively comfortable progress, seeing off lower league Terrassa, Yeclano and Alcorcon but clearly this is a major step up in class.
Sevilla vs Valencia Predictions
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Valencia
These Valencia players may enjoy the pressure being off here and it could help them to put in a better display. Overall though, Sevilla have sufficient depth in some areas of the pitch to make the odd change and still win this game and Julen Lopetegui will be pretty determined to do that with this draw now opening up nicely for the Andalusian side.
