This Wednesday we have an interesting Copa Del Rey fixture as Rayo Vallecano host Barcelona in the Estadio Vallecas. When these teams meet there are always goals and we should see a few again in this fixture.
Rayo will go into this match as huge underdogs but this won’t bother Head Coach Andoni Iraola. He took his old club Mirandés to the semi-finals last year beating the likes of Sevilla and Villarreal along the way. They already have a win over Elche to boost their confidence and their home record in all competitions is very good having only lost twice.
Rayo are sitting comfortably in the play offs in the Segunda Division and a win here could really give them a boost. They do come into this game following a real setback though in the shape of a rare home defeat to promotion rivals Mallorca, a match which saw Iraola sent off for protesting too much.
Barcelona made it very hard for themselves in their last outing in the Copa Del Rey. They narrowly edged out Segunda B side Cornellà in extra time. Cornellà goalkeeper Ramon Juan enjoyed the match of his life making several key stops and saving two penalties. Barça struggled to find their rhythm and that will be a worry for Ronald Koeman with his side not performing like they were a few weeks ago.
The Catalans did win at the weekend away at Elche and have captain Leo Messi back from suspension. It is unlikely he will start but it will cross Ronald Koeman’s mind whether it is worth it to put him into the squad in case his side are struggling. With both Madrid sides out and Barça missing out in the Supercopa, it is important that they can get the result here and build on this chaotic season they are having on and off the pitch.

Rayo’s last win over Barça was way back in 2002. Andoni Iraola will know that now is a better time than ever to play a team that is struggling for consistency and has problems off the pitch. Barça on the other hand love to play here and historically score goals. Problems or not, Ronald Koeman’s side should have more than enough quality to get the win.
