Villarreal vs Granada Preview
Two sides with European ambitions this season meet at the Ceramica on Wednesday night as Villarreal play host to Granada. Both are enjoying strong campaigns again and this promises to be a really good contest and a decent barometer as to whether Granada really are now starting to operate at a level that could allow them to compete with the likes of Villarreal over the course of the season.
This will be tough for the visitors though with the Yellow Submarine in good form right now. Unai Emery’s side have won back-to-back league games to put themselves in 4th place and they look like genuine Champions League contenders now with Real Sociedad faltering and Sevilla not 100% convincing.
Villarreal were very impressive in their last league game, racing into a 4-0 lead in Vigo against Celta. They made it 4 straight wins in all competitions at the weekend as Fer Nino’s late backheel finish secured Copa del Rey progress at Tenerife and this promises to be quite an exciting second half of the season for Villarreal fans with the team competing well on three fronts.
The same could be said of Granada who secured local bragging rights as well as a place in the Copa del Rey last 16 by beating Malaga at the weekend. They also have European dates to look forward to and it’s impressive how well they have managed to compete on multiple fronts having never previously tasted continental action.
One slight disappointment for Diego Martinez this term may be their away record in LaLiga. Granada have lost 5 of their 8 road games and put in one of the worst showings of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Eibar in their last away match in the league.
