Real Valladolid vs Elche Preview

Real Valladolid vs Elche preview

After an entertaining weekend of cup action, LaLiga returns with something of a relegation six-pointer as Real Valladolid host Elche. The sides are currently 17th and 18th in the Spanish top flight and based on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far this term, both sides are likely to be in the relegation shake-up for the duration of the campaign.

Real Valladolid had slightly loftier ambitions but like many before them, they’ve struggled to make that transition from an organised and functional team in the bottom half to something a bit more expansive. Fabian Orellana was the guy who was expected to provide a bit of extra spark in the final third but a return of 2 goals and no assists is a significant decline on what he managed with Eibar last season when he played a part in 15 goals in total.

Real Valladolid’s current form is pretty mixed with 2 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats from their last 8 games. They’d have been disappointed to lose at home to fellow strugglers Valencia last time out in LaLiga and were taken to Extra Time by Ibiza minnows Peña Deportiva in the Copa del Rey at the weekend before Roque Mesa was their unlikely match-winner with a brace.

As for Elche, they were sent packing by second tier Rayo Vallecano although the Copa was never going to be a serious target for them in the incredibly difficult circumstances of their first season back in LaLiga. They’ve got to January with a respectable return of 16 points from 16 games but are in clear need of a bit more quality this month.

They’ve already made one good signing by taking Johan Mojica on loan from Girona. The Colombian full-back shone for the Catalan club a couple of seasons ago in the top flight and looks capable of quickly cementing himself in the Elche first XI as they continue their battle for survival.

Real Valladolid vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Valladolid 1-0 Elche

These are two of the poorer teams in the league and both are hampered by a number of selection issues here. Overall, Real Valladolid’s squad has a bit more depth and top flight experience to it and they may just have the edge here against an Elche side that is now starting to look the relegation favourites that many suspected they would be.
