Athletic Club vs Barcelona Preview

The Super Cup Final will be taking place this Sunday in the Estadio La Cartuja with Barcelona taking on Athletic Bilbao. Judging by both semi-finals, we should be in for a great spectacle.
Leo Messi will be key for Barcelona in this match, as he is in every other game, but there is extra history here. He loves to score against Athletic and how can we forget the great goal he scored in the Copa Del Rey final back in 2015 as well as the brace only earlier this month. The question is will he overcome his niggle which saw him sit out the semi-final clash against Real Sociedad?
In that match, Barça missed their genius. Pedri and Ousmane Dembélé were the ones who shone in attack but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Frenkie De Jong’s sublime header put the Catalans in front but Real Sociedad stayed in the game and had a lot of chances and levelled not long after half time. It was goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen’s heroics in the penalty shootout that helped the Blaugranes get through to the final.
Ronald Koeman will be hoping his players defend better in this match than what they did when they played Athletic last week. Barça will go into this game very confident and will look to lift this cup for a record 14th time and claim their first trophy under Ronald Koeman.
Athletic put on a great performance in the semi-final against Real Madrid. In typical Marcelino fashion they were hard to break down and lightning on the counter attack. Raul Garcia’s double was enough for Los Leones. The scoreline could have been more in Athletics favour if they had taken their chances.
Los Blancos did have their opportunities too but not many were clear cut. That victory will be a massive confidence boost to Marcelino’s side who have had a bit of a rough ride this season.
Barcelona will go into this match as favourites but that shouldn’t bother Marcelino as he triumphed against Barça back in 2019 in the Copa Del Rey Final. They will, like most who play Barcelona, have to be at their best to get their hands on the trophy and will have to probably better their performance against Madrid.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Athletic Wins, 2 Barcelona Wins, 2 Draws.
- Barcelona won 3-2 at San Mames less than a fortnight ago in Marcelino’s first game as Athletic boss.
- Athletic did win 2 of the 3 meetings last season though – both by 1-0 margins in Bilbao.
- Athletic’s most recent trophy was the 2015 Supercopa when they beat Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate to end a long trophy drought.
Athletic Club vs Barcelona Predictions
Score Prediction: Athletic Club 1-3 Barcelona
Athletic will have their chances in this match and will make it hard for this Barcelona side but Ronald Koeman’s men are in fine form at the moment. They are unbeaten in nine games and they should have too much for Athletic. Leo Messi will most probably play and you wouldn’t put it past him to score another great goal in the final.
