Ponferradina vs Girona Preview
Two sides who are currently just outside the play-off places in the Spanish Segunda Division meet on Monday. Girona are hoping to get back to the top flight having recently experienced life amongst the Spanish elite. Ponferradina meanwhile are trying to get there for the first time and become the latest small club to climb all the way up the Spanish football ladder.
They were in the Segunda B as recently as 2019 and only narrowly avoided relegation back there last season. However they have real stability off the pitch with Bolo doing a good job as coach and the side from Castile and León are in a position to mount an unlikely play-off push.
They have lost 2 of their last 3 games overall with a COVID-19 outbreak, which has left Bolo unable to lead the team, halting their progress to some extent. However they have been in really good form at the tiny Estadio El Toralín. Ponfe have taken 10 points from their last 4 home games, seeing off Oviedo, Zaragoza and high-flying Leganes in the process.
It should be a competitive game here with Girona also looking much more like top six contenders than they did earlier in the season. Three straight wins towards the end of 2020 coincided with the return to fitness of talisman Cristhian Stuani but it’s three league games without scoring for the Catalans heading into this, including a goalless derby draw against Sabadell last time out.
While they are currently lower down than where they finished last term, one notable improvement in Girona in 2020/21 has been their away form. They’ve already won more road games this season than they did in the whole of the last campaign when a return of just 16 points from 21 away games effectively costing them a shot at automatic promotion.

It’s just 2 goals in 4 games for Ponfe heading into this and none in 3 for the visitors in the league and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if we saw this end in stalemate.
