UD Ibiza vs Celta Vigo Preview
Celta Vigo travel to the island of Ibiza for what could be a tricky Copa del Rey 2nd Round clash. UD Ibiza almost caused the mother all cup upsets in last season’s competition against Barcelona and will have their sights set on giving another top flight team a run for their money here.
Founded only in 2015, UD Ibiza have risen quickly to become a real force in the Spanish Segunda B. They have been aided by significant financial backing but it’s still extraordinary just how quickly they have managed to get very competitive on the football pitch and they were 1-0 up against Barcelona for more than an hour in this competition last term before two late goals from Antoine Griezmann turned things around.
Twelve months on, UD Ibiza’s priorities this season will be trying to secure promotion to the Segunda Division, although they certainly wouldn’t turn down a good cup run. They are currently top of their section in the Segunda B having conceded just once in their 8 league matches so far this term. They did though need Extra Time to see off Compostela in the last round of this competition.
They will have their work cut out to cause an upset against Celta Vigo who have made a flying start to life under Eduardo Coudet. The Galicians had won 6 out of 7 in all competitions before going down 2-0 at Real Madrid in LaLiga at the weekend.
Celta may be one top flight team that will feel as though the Copa is really worth targeting this year. They don’t have any European distractions and may be capable or putting a really good run together, although they have been dealt a tougher 2nd Round tie than most top flight clubs.
Perhaps more damaging than their weekend defeat was the loss of two key players to injury. Both Iago Aspas and Nolito went off at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano and both may now be out for a month or more which is a massive blow for the Galicians who had just found a new lease of life under their new boss.
UD Ibiza vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: UD Ibiza 1-1 Celta Vigo – Match goes to Extra Time/Pens
Celta had been scoring for fun under Coudet but the loss of Aspas and Nolito suddenly leaves them a bit short on options in the final third. Aspas has once again been their absolute talisman and will be sorely missed and this could be an awkward game for Celta. UD Ibiza are one of the strongest sides in the Segunda B and could push them all the way.
