Sporting Gijon vs Leganes Preview

Sporting Gijon vs Leganes preview

Monday night in LaLiga SmartBank sees Sporting de Gijón host Leganés at El Molinón in an important clash in the promotion-race. Both sides haven’t been in the kind of find form we saw from them at the beginning of the season. With Mallorca, Espanyol and Almería continuing to win games, the gap to the automatic promotion spots is widening for Leganés and Sporting who sit 4th and 5th respectively.

Sporting are continuing to heavily rely on Uroš Đurđević for goals. The Serb was the difference once again last week in a 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza. His goal in the 77th minute ended the Asturian side’s three match winless run. Djuka has now scored half of Sporting’s 18 goals this term. Los Rojiblancos were in Copa del Rey action in mid-week and had to come from behind to win 2-1 against fourth-tier Quintanar del Rey.

David Gallego’s side is the only remaining unbeaten team at home in the Segunda. But Monday night poses a tougher challenge as this is their first home game against a side placed higher than them in the table. Also, when it comes to matches against rival promotion-chasing teams, Sporting aren’t doing too well either. They have failed to beat Mallorca, Espanyol and Rayo in the past four weeks.

José Luis Martí’s Leganés are also seeing a dip in form and have only one win in the last four matches after winning four of the previous five. The difference in their home and away form is also quite staggering. Los Pepineros are averaging 2.40 points per game at the Butarque but only 1 point per game on the road. Their eight away matches have yielded only two wins and six goals so far.

Leganés come to Gijón on the back of a 1-0 loss to Mallorca, their second home defeat of the season. The loss of captain Unai Bustinza through injury and the sending off of Rober Ibáñez didn’t help matters, and the hosts never really stood a chance against the red-hot Mallorca side.

Like Sporting, Leganés were also made to work hard by Tercera División opposition in the Copa on Tuesday. Galician side Ourense took them to extra time where the breakthrough came via defender Sergio González in the 101st minute. That’s an away win for Lega but it isn’t much of a boost heading into Monday’s big game.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Sporting Wins, 1 Draw.
  • The sides haven’t met since LaLiga 2016/17 when Sporting won both meetings but it was they and not Leganes that got relegated that year.
  • Sporting haven’t lost any of their last 12 matches against Leganes but 4 of the last 6 in Asturias have ended all square.

Sporting Gijon vs Leganes Predictions

Score Prediction: Sporting Gijon 0-0 Leganes

It doesn’t look like there are many goals in this match. Maybe not even one. Both Sporting and Leganés are averaging only a goal per game so far this season and might nullify each other here. Sporting are yet to lose at home while Leganés aren’t the best travellers in the league, and we may see these trends continue.
