The weekend action in LaLiga concludes at Ipurua where Eibar entertain Real Madrid. The defending champions have just hit form heading into this busy festive period of league action. However they will need no reminding that it is these kind of supposedly easier fixtures, where they have been slipping up.

Eibar will take encouragement from that as they look to replicate their famous 3-0 win over Los Blancos from November 2018. They’ve lost all three matches against Madrid since then but they are doing much better this season than many expected.

Eibar are unbeaten in 5 league games coming into this and while only one of those produced a victory for the Basques, they are gradually accumulating points and are currently safely positioned in mid-table. Curiously it is their away results that have carried them this term with Eibar yet to claim a single home victory from 7 outings at Ipurua.

Real Madrid are averaging 2 points per game on their travels, which mirrors their record at home. That’s a very healthy return when you consider they’ve already travelled to Barcelona and Sevilla, winning both matches. Los Blancos recorded a 4th straight win in all competitions in midweek, seeing off Athletic 3-1 in LaLiga and there has been a noticeable increase in the level of football they’ve managed to produce over the past fortnight.

That’s an ominous warning for Eibar but with the games coming thick and fast, Zinedine Zidane may decide to rotate his team a little here which could give the hosts a bit more hope. Fortunately for Zizou, the overall injury situation in the Madrid squad is improving with Martin Odegaard fit again while Eden Hazard is also nearing a return following his latest injury setback.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Eibar Win, 5 Real Madrid Wins.
  • Eibar defeated Real Madrid 3-0 on this ground in LaLiga in November 2018.
  • That’s the only time they’ve ever won a league game against Los Blancos.
  • Since joining the top flight in 2014, Eibar have lost 10 of their 12 matches vs Real Madrid.

Team News

Eibar have some pretty extensive selection problems here with Esteban Burgos suspended, as well as doubts over Paulo Oliveira, Pedro Bigas, Kevin Rodrigues and Sergi Enrich.

This game is likely to come just too soon for Eden Hazard, Mariano and Luka Jovic but otherwise Zidane should have a fully fit squad to choose from.

Predicted Eibar Starting Lineup:

Dmitrovic – Kevin, Bigas, Arbilla, Pozo – Gil, Diop, Exposito, Inui – Muto, Kike (4-4-2)

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal – Kroos, Casemiro, Valverde – Vinicius, Benzema, Vazquez (4-3-3)

Eibar vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Eibar 0-2 Real Madrid

Over the past fortnight, Real Madrid have looked much more like the side that powered their way to the 2019/20 title with that strong run of form post lockdown. In many respects, they’ve been even better in some of those key recent wins but league titles are won over 38 games. All betting websites will have them as the clear favourites here, but they need to find that same level of desire and intensity in these kinds of matches. Overall, given Eibar’s really poor home record, it’s hard to see Los Blancos not collecting all the points.
