Ponferradina vs Real Oviedo Preview
The weekend action in Spain kicks off in the Segunda Division with a meeting between two teams from northern Spain. Both Ponferradina and Real Oviedo are currently just outside the play-off places but victory for either side here would see them move into the top six.
In both cases, that would mark a significant upturn in fortunes since last season. Ponferradina ultimately only stayed up by virtue of a superior head-to-head record against Deportivo La Coruna while Real Oviedo were also in the thick of the relegation battle for most of the season. However in a league where just 10 points separated the best of the relegated teams from Elche, who went on to claim promotion having finished 6th last season, it only takes small improvements to go from the bottom end of the league to being in a position where a play-off push is possible.
With so many bigger and wealthier clubs in the Segunda, it would be a huge shock if tiny Ponferradina were to end up seriously challenging for promotion this season. However right now, they clearly believe in themselves. It’s just one defeat in seven games for Bolo’s men with the former Rayo Vallecano forward starting to make a bit of a name for himself as one of the emerging Spanish coaches.
As for Real Oviedo, they have made strides forward under Cuco Ziganda who boasts over a 40% win ratio since taking charge in February. They have been stronger in the final third under his leadership and their 4-2 win over Tenerife last time out ensures they now have the Segunda Division’s 4th best goalscoring record, behind only Mallorca, Espanyol and Almeria. They are also 4th in the form table for the last eight games, again trailing the same three sides.
