Girona vs Rayo Vallecano Preview
Two sides with relatively recent top flight experience clash in LaLiga SmartBank on Monday night. Both Girona and Rayo Vallecano were relegated from the top flight in 2019 and unlike Huesca who also went down with, they were unable to find their way back last season.
Both sides come into this game with an identical record of 27 points from 17 games this time around. That’s good enough to leave the duo just outside the top six, although Girona will be confident they can now go on a bit of a charge with talisman Cristhian Stuani fit again.
The Uruguayan has only completed 90 minutes once so far this season. However he showed signs of getting back to full match sharpness last time out, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over UD Logrones. Even before that his return to the matchday squad appeared to lift his teammates and Girona head into this following three straight wins to nil to propel them up into the right half of the league.
Rayo Vallecano’s last match was also at home to UD Logrones. They won it 2-1 but their overall form has been mixed with just 2 wins in 7 prior to that. Their most recent away game resulted in a 1-0 derby defeat against Leganes and Andoni Iraola’s side are averaging just 0.89 points per game on their travels so far this season.
That certainly isn’t going to be enough to enable Rayo to compete with the likes of Espanyol and Mallorca who are both setting the bar very high at the top of the league. We aren’t quite halfway through this season, but already it feels as though a play-off place may be the best Girona and Rayo can hope and victory here for either would be another step in the right direction.

The Uruguayan scored a hat-trick in this fixture last season and has scored more goals against the Madrid club than any other opponent in Spain throughout his career. With Rayo not great on the road, a Girona win looks the most likely outcome here.
