The matchday 18 action in the Segunda Division kicks off on Friday night with something of a local derby. Although in different regions, there’s only around 100 km between Lugo in Galicia and Ponferradina in the community of Castile and León. They are two small clubs hoping to gatecrash the promotion race this season and clinch top flight football for the very first time.

Lugo are now an established Segunda outfit in what is their 9th consecutive season at this level. The passing and often attacking football of their early years in this division has made way for a more combative style under current boss Mehdi Nafti. So far though, the Tunisian’s approach has been very effective.

The Galicians head into this match sat comfortably in mid-table, closer to the play-off places than the relegation positions. There’s a real symmetry to their season stats with their 17 games seeing them score 17 and concede 17. They head into this one following four straight draws which will be a slight source of frustration for a team that did win 4 of their opening 6 home games.

As for Ponferradina, they would be even more surprising promotion candidates in many respects. This is only their second season back at this level and they finished just one place above the relegation zone last term. However things are going much better this time around and they head into this unbeaten in 6 matches, and in 6th place.

Given the club has never finished higher than 7th in the Segunda Division, these really are good times at the Estadio El Toralín. They’ll take confidence into this also thanks to their strong away record. They’ve won half of their matches on the road so far this term and their average of 1.63 points per away game is better than what they’ve managed at home.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Ponferradina Wins, 2 Lugo Wins, 1 Draw.
  • The sides resumed hostilities last season with the sides drawing 2-2 in Galicia while Lugo were 1-0 winners away to Ponfe.
  • 4 of the last 6 meetings in Lugo have been drawn.

Lugo vs Ponferradina Predictions

Score Prediction: Lugo 1-1 Ponferradina

It’s difficult to split these sides and while Ponferradina are currently slightly higher up the league, there isn’t much to choose between them. Lugo’s current drawing streak and Ponfe’s strong away record suggests we may see the points shared.
