Real Madrid are faced with a massive football match this Wednesday as they battle for their future in this season’s UEFA Champions League. Group B is so finely poised heading into the final matchday, that none of the four teams have secured qualification yet any of them could still progress. Los Blancos will most likely win the group if they win this match, yet they could finish bottom and be out of Europe altogether if they lose.

Zinedine Zidane will be wondering quite how they’ve managed to get themselves into this position. The answer, in brief, lies in two almost inexplicable defeats to Shakhtar Donetsk. Those losses are even harder to fathom when you consider Madrid’s final opponents Borussia Monchengladbach beat Shakhtar by an aggregate score of 10-0 over their two meetings.

If there are positives for Madrid fans at the moment, it’s that their team has generally produced a performance and got a result in the tougher games and when they’ve needed it most this season. Despite home losses to the likes of Shakhtar, Cadiz and Alaves, they’ve also won away to Barcelona and Sevilla in LaLiga and won both games against Inter, supposedly their toughest opponents in this UEFA Champions League group.

Borussia Monchengladbach are the leaders heading into the final matchday though and showed their qualities in the reverse fixture which saw Los Blancos need two late goals to salvage a point. Gladbach also had a chance to seal qualification last week but like Real Madrid they blew it, going down 3-2 at home to Inter, their first defeat in this year’s competition.

With 16 goals in 5 games, the Germans clearly have the firepower to cause Real Madrid problems. They rested some key men in the league at the weekend, including Marcus Thuram who was so destructive on the left flank in the first meeting.

Head to Head

  • Real Madrid came from behind to draw 2-2 in the meeting in Germany earlier in the group.
  • The sides hadn’t previously met since an extraordinary UEFA Cup 3rd Round tie in 1985/86.
  • Borussia Monchengladbach won the 1st Leg 5-1 in Germany, however Real Madrid ultimately progressed on away goals, winning 4-0 in the 2nd Leg at the Bernabeu with Valdano and Santillana both scoring twice.

Team News

Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal are expected to be fit for Real Madrid. Eden Hazard and Fede Valverde remain sidelined while Martin Odegaard could feature off the bench.

The visitors are likely to be missing full-back Ramy Bensebaini who recently tested positive for COVID-19. Centre-back Nico Elvedi is also a doubt.

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Mendy, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal – Modric, Casemiro, Kroos – Vini, Benzema, Asensio (4-3-3)

Predicted Gladbach Starting Lineup:

Sommer – Wendt, Kramer, Ginter, Lainer – Neuhaus, Zakaria – Thuram, Stindl, Lazaro – Plea (4-2-3-1)

Real Madrid vs Borussia Monchengladbach Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

Nothing tends to sharpen the minds of Real Madrid players like a big Champions League night. They are not used to them coming as early as the group stage but with Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal expected to be fit, we should see a more assured defensive display from the defending Spanish champions than the one in Kiev last week. Real Madrid’s considerable extra UCL experience could be telling on a night like this against a dangerous Gladbach side and may just be enough to see them through.
