The race for promotion from the Segunda Division is really heating up and it looks as though finishing in the top two is going to be tougher this year than it was last. Leganes are one side with automatic promotion ambitions but they need to start winning more games on the road if they are going to sustain a challenge and they’ll be eager to prove a point in the Canary Islands on Monday night.

Tenerife look more like they are going to end up battling relegation this term. Their return of 16 points from 16 games typically equates to relegation form although they are just outside the bottom four heading into this matchday.

Their poor start resulted in the sacking of coach Fran Fernandez last month. Former Almeria and Albacete boss Luis Miguel Ramis is the new man at the helm. His first two games were against his two most recent employers, resulting in one win and one defeat with a 2-0 win at the Estadio Carlos Belmonte the highlight of his brief reign so far. However they do head into this game following a damaging 2-1 home defeat against newly promoted Sabadell.

Leganes by contrast take good form into this game. They’ve won 5 of their last 7 matches during a busy period of Segunda Division action. The most recent was a satisfying 1-0 Madrid derby win against local rivals and fellow promotion hopefuls Rayo Vallecano.

If José Luis Martí’s side are truly going to keep pace with the likes of Espanyol, Mallorca and Almeria, they are going to have to start winning more consistently on the road though. Leganes have won just 2 of their 7 road games so far this season, losing 4 with a 3-2 defeat at Ponferradina their most recent away result.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Tenerife Wins, 2 Leganes, 1 Draw.
  • The sides haven’t met since the 2015/16 Segunda Division season.
  • There was only one goal in the two meetings that year, scored by Tenerife at Butarque.

Tenerife vs Leganes Predictions

Score Prediction: Tenerife 0-1 Leganes

Tenerife do look like a team that is in trouble and the coaching switch doesn’t appear to have served up an immediate remedy to their problems. They’ve lost back-to-back home games against newly promoted sides heading into this match and while Leganes haven’t been great travellers so far, they have a bit more quality as well as a deeper squad which ought to have coped with this busy period slightly better.
