One of the biggest games of the Segunda Division season so far takes place on Thursday in Andalusia as the league’s two form teams clash. Mallorca currently head the pack of three teams who have just come down from the top flight and are looking strong to compete for an immediate return. However Almeria are determined to make sure those clubs don’t have it all their own way.

The 2019/20 season was something of a circus at Almeria as their expensively compiled squad failed to deliver promotion, perhaps not helped by their trigger-happy owner dismissing a series of coaches. José Gomes took over just prior to the play-offs last term and failed to have the immediate impact that Almeria fans would have hoped for. However after a summer of rebuilding and with greater time to work with his players, the Portuguese boss is starting to deliver results.

Almeria head into this on a six game winning streak following a 2-1 victory at Real Oviedo on Monday night. Their return of 22 points from their last 8 games is the best in the league, although Mallorca aren’t lagging too far behind and are 2nd in the form table with 20 points over the same period.

In the very short term, this match will determine who tops the table heading into the weekend action, however it’s about more than just three points. Victory for Mallorca away to a promotion rival would be a clear signal of intent that they are the team to beat this year in the Segunda Division. However a seventh straight win for Almeria would be a huge boost to their hopes and would send a signal not just to Mallorca but also to the RCDE Stadium where Espanyol were hoping to enjoy a smooth passage back to LaLiga.

In complete contrast to last season, Mallorca’s main strength has been at the back. They’ve conceded just 3 goals in 15 matches so far which is an absolutely extraordinary record. Things also went well at the other end last time out as they hammered an in-form UD Logrones side 4-0, although their opponents were reduced to 10 men after just 4 minutes.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Almeria Wins, 3 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
  • 5 of the last 6 meetings have been won by the team playing at home.
  • Mallorca haven’t won on any of their last 9 trips to Almeria, losing 4 of the last 5.

Almeria vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Almeria 1-1 Mallorca

Both sides look like strong promotion candidates and we may just see caution take over in the early stages here as both teams look to get a feel for one another. Almeria are on a roll but they do sometimes struggle at home and this one looks like it could end in stalemate, a result which wouldn’t be a disaster for either coach.
