Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich Preview

Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich match preview

Atletico Madrid are out for revenge on Tuesday as they host Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Los Rojiblancos were hammered in Bavaria back on matchday one, losing 4-0 to equal their heaviest defeat in the Diego Simeone era. However they have responded well to that overall and ought to be much more competitive here against the defending champions.

Since defeat in Munich, Atleti have played 8 times in all competitions, winning 6 and drawing 2. Those 2 draws did both come in the Champions League though, with Lokomotiv Moscow frustrating Atleti both home and away. The Spanish side are still 2nd in this group and will qualify for the next stage if they win this match and Lokomotiv fail to beat Salzburg. However if Atleti don’t secure qualification on Tuesday, they’ll be left with a decisive and potentially awkward final game in Austria next week.

Defensively, they’ve been excellent in recent weeks, keeping four straight clean sheets, including back to back 1-0 wins in LaLiga over Barcelona and Valencia. They’ll need to produce another performance on that kind of level if they are going to thwart the threat of the free-scoring Germans.

Bayern have already qualified for the next round having won all of their four matches to date. Significantly they have also already won the group which means there’s not an awful amount riding on this game for the defending champions. As a result, Bayern have opted to leave the likes of Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski at home and understandably any opportunity to conserve energy in this busy season has to be taken.

On top of the Bundesliga again, Bayern look like they are going to be difficult to stop in the Champions League once more this season. They are averaging over 3 goals per game in both competitions but it’s hard to see any repeat of their thumping 4-0 win in the reverse fixture here.

Head to Head

  • Bayern won 4-0 when the sides met back on matchday 1.
  • The sides also met 4 times in 2016.
  • Atleti emerged as winners on away goals in the Champions League Semi-Finals, with a 1-0 win at the Vicente Calderon helping seal their progress.
  • The group stage meetings the following season both produced 1-0 home wins.

Team News

Atleti are still waiting for Lucas Torreira and Luis Suarez to return negative COVID-19 tests and may be missing the two Uruguayans again here. Héctor Herrera is an injury doubt.

Corentin Tolisso, Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka have all been left in Germany. Marc Roca is suspended while key men Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies are both injured meaning this will be some way off their strongest XI.

Predicted Atleti Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Lodi, Gimenez, Savic, Trippier – Carrasco, Saul, Koke, Llorente – Felix, Correa (4-4-2)

Predicted Bayern Starting Lineup:

Nubel – Hernandez, Sule, Alaba, Pavard – Martinez – Costa, Gnabry, Musiala, Sane – Choupo-Moting (4-1-4-1)

Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Bayern Munich

With key men not travelling and nothing really at stake in this match at an empty stadium, Bayern may struggle to find their usual level of intensity here. Atleti have responded brilliantly to losing in Munich and will take confidence from having beaten the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2020. They look capable of seeing off what will be a much weakened Bayern team.
