Getafe vs Athletic Bilbao Preview
Two teams that would have started the season with European ambitions clash at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Sunday. Both sides are currently within touching distance of the Europa League places but there are doubts as to whether either is going to have enough quality to sustain a push with flaws evident in both cases.
A lack of goals is Getafe’s main problem. Only Eibar have netted fewer than Getafe’s total of 8 goals, 3 of which came in one game against Betis. There was always going to have to be something of a regeneration process to their frontline with their three main forwards from the last couple of years all the wrong side of 30. Jorge Molina has departed and while Jaime Mata and Angel have contributed over half of Geta’s goals this season, new signings Cucho Hernandez and Enes Unal have failed to hit the ground running.
Those problems have contributed to Getafe’s winless run of four games heading into this. They drew 0-0 at Eibar last time out and they’ve lost both home games since surprising Barcelona 1-0 in what was their most recent LaLiga win.
Athletic also looked to be struggling to pack a punch in the final third but their players delivered a pretty emphatic response with a crushing 4-0 win over Real Betis on Monday night. In ordinary circumstances they’d be able to take great confidence into this game as a result, but their woeful away record suggests that may not be the case.
Their last two home wins have both been immediately followed by disappointing away defeats against Osasuna and Real Valladolid. They’ve lost 4 of their 5 road games so far in LaLiga 2020/21 and this is arguably their toughest away fixture to date.

Getafe vs Athletic Bilbao Predictions
Score Prediction: Getafe 1-0 Athletic
There’s not a lot to choose between the teams but home advantage may just tilt this in favour of Getafe. As good as Athletic were against Betis, they’ve not shown any signs that they are capable of reproducing those kinds of displays on the road and it’d be no surprise if they end up travelling back to Bilbao with nothing from what is likely to be a game of few chances.
