Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Preview
There’s a heavyweight clash at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday as Atletico Madrid take on Barcelona. Some of the spice has been taken out of the game with Luis Suarez set to miss out on facing his former club having tested positive for COVID. However this is still a very important night for the hosts who would move 9 points clear of their opponents and really signal their intent to challenge for the title with a win.
On current form they are very capable of getting it, but Diego Simeone’s failure to ever win a league match against Barcelona is hard to ignore, particularly with Atleti’s buildup to this game having been hampered by injuries and positive COVID tests. A breakout in the Uruguayan international camp means Lucas Torreira and Luis Suarez are both unavailable but Los Rojiblancos will be able to count on the services of a red hot Joao Felix.
The Portuguese youngster is starting to really show why Atletico Madrid paid all that money for his services last year. He has bagged braces in 3 of his last 4 Atleti appearances and was also on the scoresheet twice for Portugal during the international break.
Barcelona will need to be at their best defensively to nullify his threat and it’s probably fair to say they haven’t been of late. They’ve not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 5 league outings but did end a four game winless streak with a convincing 5-2 win over Real Betis last time out.
With top scorer Ansu Fati suffering a serious injury, there is now all the more pressure on Leo Messi and Antoine Griezmann to finally hit it off and the chances of that happening won’t have been helped by fresh media reports this week about what hasn’t been the easiest of relationships.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Atleti Wins, 3 Barcelona Wins, 2 Draws.
- Barcelona won at the Wanda Metropolitano for the first time with a 1-0 win here in LaLiga last December.
- Atleti gained a degree of revenge with a 3-2 Supercopa win and a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou later last season.
- However they still haven’t beaten Barcelona in LaLiga under Diego Simeone.
Atleti are missing Luis Suarez and Lucas Torreira to COVID while Stefan Savic, Vitolo and Diego Costa are all injury doubts.
Ansu Fati is expected to be out until March meaning Pedri may make another start here. Philippe Coutinho should be fit enough to feature, but most likely off the bench.
Predicted Atleti Starting Lineup:
Oblak – Hermoso, Gimenez, Savic, Trippier – Carrasco, Saul, Koke, Llorente – Felix, Correa (4-4-2)
Predicted Barcelona Starting Lineup:
Ter Stegen – Alba, Lenglet, Pique, Roberto – De Jong, Pjanic – Pedri, Griezmann, Dembele – Messi (4-2-3-1)
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Predictions
Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona
The absence of Luis Suarez is a blow not just for neutrals, but for Atleti’s chances of winning this match. A hungry Suarez with a point to prove, is always ominous for the opposition and it was almost written in the stars that he was going to have a major role to play in this match. Sadly that won’t now be the case and it’s doubtful whether Atleti can pose quite the same threat but a point is still the very least they should be getting from this game with Barcelona often still flattering to deceive.
