It’s a cracking Sunday evening fixture in LaLiga SmartBank as two of the league’s high-flying teams lock horns at Son Moix on Matchday 13. Mallorca and Sporting de Gijón are only separated by two points in the second and third positions and look set to be contenders for an automatic promotion spot as heavily-fancied Espanyol continue to lead the charts.

Mallorca were history-makers last Saturday becoming the first team ever to not let in a single goal in the opening six away games of the season. Their two goals conceded in the first 12 matches is also a new league record.

Salva Sevilla’s early goal at Montilivi was enough to pick up all three points for Los Bermellones. Manolo Reina’s clean sheet fell in danger when Pablo Moreno back-heeled past the 35 year-old in the first half only for the goal to be ruled out after a lengthy VAR check for a foul in the build-up. Luis García’s side have now gone 11 matches unbeaten with their only loss coming all the way back on Matchday 1 against Rayo Vallecano.

Rayo were the visitors at El Molinón on Monday night and snatched a point via an 87th minute Andrés Martín equaliser. His terrific volley cancelled out Fran García’s own goal which had gifted 10-man Sporting the lead after the sending off of Carlos Carmona past the hour mark.

David Gallego’s men have lost three of their last four fixtures on the road, all by a goal to nil, including the derby at Oviedo last month which ended their perfect start to the season.

Djuka will be the latest dangerman to go up against the stern Mallorca defense. The Serbian striker is in stupendous form scoring six of Sporting’s 12 goals this term so far and also found the net on his previous trip to the island last year.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Mallorca Win, 5 Sporting Wins.
  • Mallorca were 2-1 victors the last time the sides met, in a Segunda Division match at Son Moix in May 2019.
  • However Sporting had won all of the previous 5 meetings and had also won on all of their previous 5 visits to Palma de Mallorca.

Mallorca vs Sporting Gijon Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-0 Sporting Gijon

Tasty matches like this one rarely produce too many goals in the Segunda. Narrow wins have been the norm for Mallorca this season and another one of them on Sunday will not surprise us. Sporting haven’t been able to replicate their strong home form on their travels and only one win and two goals in their last four away matches is a testament to that.
