Real Madrid vs Inter Milan Preview

Real Madrid face Inter Milan in one of the glamour fixtures of the Champions League group stage. It’s a game that is befitting of a much greater stage than the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano in truth and it’s a high pressure fixture for both sides. The top two in this group are currently Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach so defeat for either side here would be a very damaging one.
Los Blancos looked to be heading for their second loss in as many matches in this competition last week they fell 2-0 down in Germany against Gladbach. However they salvaged a point with dramatic late goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro and that may just prove a turning point in their 2020/21 Champions League campaign.
The one positive for Zinedine Zidane at the moment is that his team are scoring goals, which had been the main concern about their prospects this term. They’ve scored 11 in their last 4 matches in all competitions and significantly there was a cracking goal from Eden Hazard in the 4-1 weekend win over Huesca. If the Belgian can stay fit, he will be key in Real Madrid’s bid to make it out of this group, with their chances largely hinging on how they fare in this double header against Inter.
The Italian giants are also yet to win in this group. Antonio Conte’s side were held to a 2-2 home draw by Gladbach and they drew 0-0 away to Shakhtar. It’s also just one win in four Serie A games for Inter so they don’t take any real form into this game either and are further hampered by the absence of Romelu Lukaku, the only man to have scored for them so far in the 2020/21 Champions League.
Head to Head
- The sides have met 15 times before in European competition.
- Inter have 7 wins to Real Madrid’s 6 while there have been 2 draws.
- The sides haven’t met in the Champions League since way back in the 1998/99 group stage though.
- Inter won 3-0 at the San Siro but lost 2-0 at the Bernabeu that season.
Team News
Right-back is again the main problem area for Madrid with Carvajal, Nacho and Odriozola all sidelined while makeshift full-back Lucas Vazquez is also a doubt.
Inter’s Romelu Lukaku is expected to miss this game through injury while Alexis Sanchez, Stefano Sensi and Matias Vecino are also absentees.
Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:
Courtois – Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Mendy – Kroos, Casemiro, Valverde – Hazard, Benzema, Vinicius (4-3-3)
Predicted Inter Milan Starting Lineup:
Handanovic – Kolarov, de Vrij, D’Ambrosio – Young, Vidal, Brozovic, Barella, Hakimi – Perisic, Martinez (3-5-2)
Real Madrid vs Inter Milan Predictions
Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan
For all their inconsistency in recent weeks, this is a Real Madrid side that is packed with big game players with a wealth of Champions League experience. They won’t be panicking despite their early struggles in this group and against an out of sorts Inter, Los Blancos look capable of recording a priceless victory here to lift them off the bottom of the group.
