Sporting Gijon vs Castellon Preview
High-flying Sporting Gijon are hoping to move back into the automatic promotion places in the Segunda Division on Monday. It’s still very early days of course, but Sporting look much improved this term and they will fancy their chances of sustaining a promotion push. This is certainly the kind of game they will expect to win against new boys Castellon.
Sporting appointed David Gallego in the summer. Despite a very swift dismissal in his only previous managerial job in charge of top flight Espanyol, Gallego has found it much easier to make his mark on this Sporting team.
It hasn’t always been scintillating football with just 10 goals scored in 9 matches, although it rarely is at this level and many a team has won promotion by grinding out the kind of narrow wins that Sporting are claiming at the moment. They’ve won their last two games by 2-1 margins – seeing off Ponferradina and Alcorcon and take momentum into this game as a result.
Castellon meanwhile would have been anticipating a tough season on their return to the Segunda Division after more than a decade in the regional leagues. Óscar Cano has done a terrific job but he may just be now facing the toughest challenge of his reign with Castellon having suffered four straight defeats heading into this match.
3 of those games were at home too with Almeria the latest side to win at Nou Estadi Castàlia. They’ve slipped down into the relegation zone for the first time as a result and any kind of result here would be a huge bonus for them.
