Real Betis vs Elche Preview
The first game on Sunday in LaLiga comes from the Benito Villamarin. It sees an Elche side, that have made a surprisingly strong start to life in the top flight, back in action against an inconsistent Real Betis.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have had a difficult run of fixtures so it’s perhaps no great surprise that they’ve lost on 4 of their last 5 outings. The Chilean will though be disappointed with the manner of some of those losses – most notably 3-0 defeats against Real Sociedad and Getafe.
While he wasn’t heavily backed in the transfer market, Pellegrini did inherit a squad that most would accept underachieved last season. They are a good footballing team at times and enjoyed 60% of the possession in defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano last time out but there is a slightly soft core and defensively they still leave a little to be desired.
A few weeks ago, Betis may have looked at this game as the one match in a really difficult period that they would have strongly fancied their chances in. However Elche are one of the form teams in LaLiga right now with the new boys collecting 10 points from their last 4 matches, conceding only one goal.
They won a derby against Valencia last Friday and while they have unquestionably had some moments of fortune along the way, Jorge Almirón deserves great credit for having made this much changed team competitive so early on in his reign and so soon after an unfancied Elche side won promotion from the Segunda Division via the play-offs.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Elche Wins, 1 Betis Win, 1 Draw.
- Elche have won on each of their last 3 visits to the Benito Villamarin, scoring 9 goals in the process.
- However the sides haven’t met competitively since the 2013/14 season.
- Elche won 2-1 in Sevilla that season before a 0-o draw in the reverse fixture.
Martin Montoya is suspended for the hosts. Andres Guardado, Emerson and Sidnei are all nearing fitness following injuries and will be monitored ahead of this one.
Summer signing Guido Carrillo is the only injury doubt for Elche.
Predicted Betis Starting Lineup:
Bravo – Moreno, Bartra, Mandi, Emerson – Carvalho, Rodriguez – Tello, Fekir, Canales – Sanabria (4-2-3-1)
Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:
Badia – Josema, Verdu, Barragan – Fidel, Guti, Marcone, Josan – Rigone, Milla, Morente (3-4-3)
Real Betis vs Elche Predictions
Score Prediction: Betis 2-1 Elche
Elche have only had 22 shots on goal this season, having faced 84 themselves so it’s extraordinary that they’ve managed to collect 10 points from their opening 5 fixtures. Stats never tell you the whole picture, but they do suggest that it’s going to be really tough for Elche to keep winning games where they are rarely testing the opposition goalkeeper and we might see Betis returning to winning ways here.
