Osasuna vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid head to El Sadar this weekend, the scene of a convincing 5-0 victory for Diego Simeone’s side last season. The Pamplona stadium has undergone serious renovation work since then and Osasuna supporters will be itching to get inside it when football fans are finally allowed back into Spanish top flight stadiums.
On the pitch, those Osasuna followers will be happy with what they are seeing from their team. Despite again suffering from extensive injury problems, Jagoba Arrasate has managed to ensure his depleted side have remained competitive. It has rarely been sparkling football but defensively they’ve looked very solid in recent weeks and they head into this game following three straight clean sheets.
Their last two games have both been derbies – a 0-0 draw at Eibar followed by a 1-0 victory over Athletic Club. They only hit the target twice in the latter match with Ruben Garcia’s late penalty sealing the win.
Osasuna don’t normally enjoy their outings against Atleti though. Diego Simeone’s side beat them by an aggregate score of 7-0 last term, in an otherwise low scoring season for the Madrid club. Atletico will head into this game on a positive note too having won back-to-back home games this week. They saw off Betis 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano last weekend before coming from behind to seal a vital 3-2 win over RB Salzburg in the Champions League.
That match was the first where the club’s record signing Joao Felix really took the game by the scruff of the neck and effectively decided it on his own. The Portuguese youngster fired in two Second Half goals to turn the game on its head but Simeone will be a little concerned to see his team giving up so many chances when they come up against stronger opponents.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Atleti Wins, 1 Osasuna Win.

- Osasuna’s last victory over Atleti came via a 3-0 margin at El Sadar in February 2014.
- Atletico Madrid have won on 5 of their last 6 visits to this ground overall though.

Osasuna vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Osasuna 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Atleti haven’t actually claimed a single 1-0 win so far this season, a result which has been something of a trademark for them over the past decade. However that may change this weekend. Osasuna are setting up cautiously, which is understandable given their injury list, and that will certainly be the case again here given the calibre of the opposition. Atleti will have to be patient but there are some positive signs now for them in the final third and they ought to get the win here.
