Rayo Vallecano vs Fuenlabrada Preview
There’s a Madrid derby in Vallecas on Thursday in LaLiga SmartBank. It’s a fixture that hasn’t been played too much over the years but Fuenlabrada’s recent rise suggests it could become a much more regular occurrence on the Spanish football calendar moving forwards.
Aside from local pride, it’s also a significant game in terms of the current state of play in Spain’s second tier. Both Rayo Vallecano and Fuenlabrada have started the season pretty well with both sides having taken 13 points from their opening 8 fixtures. Both sides will have top six aspirations this term having narrowly missed out in 2019/20.
Rayo do look to have made a really good appointment by making former Athletic midfielder Andoni Iraola their new head coach. While he’s just 38 and has never played below the top flight, a season in this league in charge of Mirandes will have given him the experience needed to get a feel for what’s required at this level. So far the signs are quite positive for Rayo although they have been a bit inconsistent with a home win over leaders Espanyol followed by a return of just one point from fixtures against struggling Oviedo and Albacete.
As for Fuenlabrada, they’ve put the difficult circumstances and controversy with which last season ended firmly behind them. However their form has tailed off a bit and they head into this game winless in their last four matches and having suffered their first defeat of the season last time out – going down 3-0 away to Almeria.
Head to Head
- The sides met for the first time in what are classed as Spain’s ‘professional’ leagues last season.
- Rayo won 1-0 in Vallecas after a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Fernando Torres.
Rayo Vallecano vs Fuenlabrada Predictions
Score Prediction: Rayo 2-0 Fuenla
Fuenlabrada’s early season bubble has burst now it would seem. While Almeria are likely to be promotion contenders, their failure to win any of their previous three games – all against newly promoted sides, suggests Fuenla may not be quite as strong as their early results suggested. Rayo have looked good at home with a 100% record in Vallecas so far this term and they ought to bag maximum points from this derby clash.
