Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid Preview
Three days on from Clasico victory, Real Madrid will need to match that intensity in a vital Champions League away game in Germany. Having lost at home to unfancied Shakhtar on matchday 1, Zinedine Zidane’s side really need to bounce back with maximum points here with a double-header against Inter Milan following this.
Real’s performance in the 1st Half against a much weakened Shakhtar side last week was bafflingly bad. They were 3-0 down at the break against the Ukranian club whose preparations had been severely hampered by a major COVID outbreak. Having pulled it back to 2-3 in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half, Los Blancos ultimately will feel as though they should have gone on and at least drawn the match but they couldn’t find that third goal, leaving them in a high pressure situation in this competition already.
If they can perform as they did in the 2nd Half at Camp Nou on Saturday, they have every chance of winning this game but Zinedine Zidane will be concerned by the complacencies that seem to be creeping back into games against weaker opponents.
Borussia Mönchengladbach finished 4th in the Bundesliga last season and will unquestionably provide tough opposition. Having watched RB Leipzig progress all the way to the last four last term, there is certainly encouragement for Gladbach fans although they don’t carry quite as much of a goal threat as the current ‘big three’ in German football.
Their Champions League campaign nearly got off to a dream start though with Jonas Hoffmann’s goal putting them 2-1 in front against Inter at the San Siro last week. Romelu Lukaku struck late to give Inter a deserved leveller but Marco Rose’s side laid down an early marker and showed they will be no pushovers in this group.
Head to Head
- The sides have met before but not since an extraordinary UEFA Cup 3rd Round tie in 1985/86.
- Borussia Monchengladbach won the 1st Leg 5-1 in Germany, however Real Madrid ultimately progressed on away goals, winning 4-0 in the 2nd Leg at the Bernabeu with Valdano and Santillana both scoring twice.
Team News
Andreas Poulsen, Laszlo Benes and Denis Zakaria are all sidelined through injury for Gladbach.
Nacho, Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola are all out so Lucas Vazquez is expected to be used at right-back by Madrid. Eden Hazard is fit enough to travel to Germany and may feature off the bench.
Predicted Gladbach Starting Lineup:
Sommer – Bensebaini, Elvedi, Ginter, Lainer – Neuhaus, Kramer – Thuram, Stindl, Hofmann – Plea (4-2-3-1)
Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:
Courtois – Mendy, Ramos, Varane, Vazquez – Kroos, Casemiro, Valverde – Modric – Benzema, Vinicius (4-3-1-2)
Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Gladbach 1-1 Real Madrid
This is a tough game for a Real Madrid side that have lost the fear factor of old in this competition. Borussia Mönchengladbach will believe they can cause an upset here but Los Blancos have some wily old characters who have seen and done just about everything there is to do in this competition. They ought to get on the scoresheet here but with Madrid having injury problems at right-back, the Germans could be really dangerous with Marcus Thuram down their left flank. This one could end up all square.
