Almeria vs Fuenlabrada Preview
Matchday 8 of LaLiga Smartbank sees a face-off between Almería and Fuenlabrada at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos on Saturday evening. The two clubs were promotion hopefuls last season but it ended in despair for both as Almería were knocked out in the semi-finals while Fuenla’s aspirations for the play-offs were dashed by a late goal defeat at the hands of Deportivo.
Almería have had a below par start to this season and with only one win in five matches, the Rojiblancos currently sit in the relegation zone. They lost their top scorer Darwin Núñez to Benfica in the summer but manager José Manuel Gomes was able to bring in reinforcements from the transfer sum.
The new players are yet to settle in and make a mark but striker Umar Sadiq did score his first goal for the club in the midweek 1-1 home draw against Cartagena. It was also Almería’s first goal in four matches which just shows how the goals have dried up for the Andalusians. The problem is escalated by the injury to José Carlos Lazo who had 12 goal contributions last season.
With a tough run of games coming up including clashes against Girona and Rayo, Almería will desperately wish to get back to winning ways on Saturday.
Fuenlabrada are enjoying another fine start to the campaign as the side from Madrid remain the only unbeaten team in the league and currently occupy second place behind leaders Espanyol. Their defensive solidity has improved having conceded only twice in their last five matches but goalscoring is a bit of a worry as they have drawn their last three matches.
Wednesday’s 0-0 draw against Logroñés was the first time Fuenla failed to score this season. It was a dull affair at the Fernando Torres with no clear cut chances for any team and Jose Ramón Sandoval would have wanted more from his players.

It was a better performance from Almería in midweek and the new-look offence is starting to gel together. Fuenlabrada look like they are starting to lose steam in front of goal after a near-perfect start of three wins in four. The home side will be expected to heavily dominate possession against a stubborn Fuenla defence. Almería are long due a home win and they might just nick this one with the arguably better midfield and attack they possess.
