Leganes vs Zaragoza Preview
Leganes and Zaragoza meet in a rare Thursday afternoon game at Butarque. Both sides started this season with ambitions of challenging for promotion after heart-breaking ends to last term.
Leganes came agonisingly close to securing one of the all-time great escapes with a final day draw against Real Madrid ending their stay in LaLiga. Meanwhile it was play-off despair for Zaragoza who had looked on course to secure automatic promotion at the time Spain went into lockdown.
Neither side has made a totally convincing start to this term. It’s 3 wins and 3 defeats so far for Lega. They do take some momentum into this game having won 1-0 away to UD Logrones at the weekend, although new boss José Luis Martí will be hungry to see more quality from his side in the final third. While even at this level, they are still one of the smaller clubs, they do have a larger budget than most thanks to their recent top flight riches and will be expected to improve on their current mid-table position.
Zaragoza have a new man at the helm too with Ruben Baraja leading their bid for promotion this term. They’ve only played 4 matches so far this season following their late end to the 2019/20 campaign and they’ll be pretty content with a return of 7 points given there was a danger they’d be struggling for fitness and match sharpness compared to the other teams. They did suffer a setback last time out though, going down 2-1 at home to crisis club Malaga.
