It’s Real Madrid against Cadiz on Saturday and it promises to be a special occasion for the Fernandez brothers. Nacho looks likely to make a rare start for Los Blancos up against younger brother Alex, a former Real Madrid academy graduate himself and now a key player for newly promoted Cadiz.

That will be an interesting subplot but it will be strictly business for Zinedine Zidane who will want his team to build on a strong start to the season which has seen them take top spot after four games. Much like their 2019/20 title win, Los Blancos have rarely hit top gear but they’ve had enough to see off Betis, Real Valladolid and Levante to ensure they head into this match on the back of three straight victories.

This is the start of a very important period for Madridistas with three consecutive weeks of Champions League action starting on Wednesday against Shakhtar while there is also the small matter of a trip to Camp Nou in LaLiga next weekend. With most players involved in internationals over the past fortnight, Zizou will certainly be thinking about how to keep his men fresh when he names his eleven here.

A rotated Madrid side could offer a glimmer of hope to Cadiz who have made an excellent start to the season on their travels. They’ve won both away games to date, seeing off Huesca and Athletic Club on the road, with the latter an incredible effort which saw them hang on for a 1-0 win despite being reduced to nine men with over 20 minutes to go.

Cadiz’s counter-attacking style does appear to be quite well suited to playing away from home and they seem content enough to let the opposition have the ball having recorded possession figures of just 27 and 29% in those two road wins.

Head to Head

  • Last 3 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Madrid Wins.
  • The sides last met in a Copa del Rey tie in 2015 with Real Madrid winning 3-1 at Cadiz, although Los Blancos were later booted out of the competition for fielding the ineligible Denis Cheryshev in that game.
  • Real Madrid did the double over Cadiz in the 2005/06 LaLiga season – the only other meetings this century.

Team News

Eden Hazard and Dani Carvajal are the main injury absentees for Real Madrid. With Alvaro Odriozola also sidelined, Nacho should start at right-back.

Luismi Quezada and Iza are both out for Cadiz however Carlos Akapo is back from a ban and should fill in for the latter at right-back. Alvaro Negredo also returns from suspension and should lead the line against his former employers.

Predicted Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Mendy, Ramos, Varane, Nacho – Casemiro, Kroos, Modric – Vincius, Benzema, Asensio (4-3-3)

Predicted Cadiz Starting Lineup:

Ledesma – Espina, Calo, Mauro, Akapo – Jonsson, Jose Mari – Pombo, Alex Fernandez, Salvi – Negredo (4-2-3-1)

Real Madrid vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Cadiz

Cadiz could be awkward opponents here for Los Blancos. The new boys will take great belief from that win at San Mames in particular and there could be moments in this game when they break and ask genuine questions of what is unlikely to be a full strength Madrid starting XI. Real are still consistently finding a way to win though and you’d expect that trend to continue here with the empty Estadio Alfredo di Stefano having turned into an unlikely fortress for them.
