LaLiga returns from the international break this weekend with a cracking Saturday of action which sees all of Spain’s Champions League participants feature. First up, it’s an Andalusian derby between Granada and Sevilla in what promises to be a really competitive contest between two sides who have had excellent years.
Granada kick off their Europa League group stage campaign this coming week and they will be hungry to demonstrate that their squad is strong enough to compete on two fronts. It’s certainly a lot deeper than last season following an excellent transfer window which saw a net spend of almost 25 million Euros, a large sum for a club of their size, particularly at a time when so many Spanish teams are struggling financially with the impact of the pandemic.
Luis Suarez of Watford was their biggest purchase late in the window and they’ll be hoping the forward who impressed on loan at Zaragoza last season can compete with the likes of Roberto Soldado and Jorge Molina for a starting role.
Sevilla were also busy again in the market with a net spend of 63 million Euros as they gear up for a return to the Champions League. They were the only Spanish top flight club to spend money on a transfer fee on deadline day as Oussama Idrissi and Karim Rekik joined to complete their squad for the new season.
Sevilla’s campaign is only three league games old following their delayed start but they’ve made a positive impression with 7 points to date, including a hard-fought draw at Camp Nou last time out, a really significant result given their usual struggles away to the big guns. They won’t expect any favours from Granada though with Diego Martinez’s side having collected maximum points from their two home league games to date.

Score Prediction: Granada 1-1 Sevilla
This promises to be a tight contest between two well coached and well-organised teams. Granada certainly overachieved last season but their recruitment has been very good and there’s no reason to think they won’t serve up a real test for all visitors to Los Carmenes this term. With Champions League action coming up this week, Sevilla may consider resting key man Lucas Ocampos, who started both games for Argentina in South America during the international break, and they might have to be content with a point from this one.
