Atletico Madrid travel to Galicia on Saturday afternoon, hoping to return to winning ways at Balaidos. They take on a Celta Vigo side that is desperate for a much improved season despite a slightly underwhelming transfer window.
The early signs for Celta have been pretty mixed in truth. They made a reasonable start with 5 points from their opening 3 games including a well deserved victory over Valencia with Iago Aspas bagging a brace. However they were brought firmly back down to earth in the final week before the international break.
They were never really in the contest against a Barcelona side that won 3-0 at Balaidos despite being reduced to 10 men in the First Half. A 2-0 away defeat at Osasuna followed that, leaving Oscar Garcia with plenty to stew on over the past fortnight as he tries to conjure up a plan to get the best out of a squad which does still possess plenty of talented players despite a lack of summer investment.
As for Atletico Madrid, the excitement and optimism that greeted their 6-1 demolition of Granada on the opening weekend, has already started to wane. With Luis Suarez and Joao Felix lining up alongside each other in attack in their subsequent two matches, Atleti fans would have been excited to see what their strike pairing could produce but they had to settle for disappointing goalless draws against Huesca and Villarreal.
They’ve since lost midfielder Thomas Partey too, after the Ghanaian’s buyout clause was met by Arsenal on deadline day. Lucas Torreira did move the other way on a loan deal, effectively as Thomas’ midfield replacement, adding to Atleti’s Uruguayan contingent.

Celta Vigo still look like a fundamentally flawed team who struggle to get the best out of their attacking players and are prone to the odd error at the back. Atletico haven’t been very good since demolishing Granada though and there could be a bit of fatigue here too with so many players returning from internationals. Another frustrating draw could be the outcome for Diego Simeone’s team.
