Leganes vs Girona Preview

Leganes vs Girona predictions

LaLiga Smartbank action continues in the international break with a heavyweight clash between Leganés and Girona at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque on Monday evening. Los Pepineros manager José Luis Martí will host his former employers Girona who showed him the door in June of this year. The Balearic coach has again been entrusted with the task of immediate promotion to the first tier, this time at the helm of Leganés after the departure of Javier Aguirre.

It has been mixed fortunes for the home side so far on their return to the Segunda with two wins and two losses. Both victories came at home with the two defeats coming on the road, including one at newly promoted Castellón last Sunday. Pep Martí’s men went behind at the half hour mark with former Girona man Ignasi Miquel heading into his own net. The Leganés firepower couldn’t breach Óscar Whalley in the Castellón goal. New signing Borja Bastón is still searching for his first goal while in form Sabin Merino, who netted thrice in the previous two matches, couldn’t do much either. In the end, the home team held on in the Second Half too and killed the game off with a late strike from Igor Zlatanović in injury time.

Girona’s second straight campaign in the Segunda hasn’t got off to the best of starts with the Catalans currently occupying bottom place but that’s partly due to the fact that they have only played two matches as their season began two weeks after the start of the league. Francisco’s men went down by a goal to nil against in-form Fuenlabrada at Montilivi on Sunday afternoon and did not manage a single shot on target in the whole game. Striker Cristhian Stuani’s return to the line-up wasn’t impactful either with the Uruguayan left pretty much isolated in the final third. Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric had a home debut to forget as his error on the goal line allowed Fuenla defender Adrián Diéguez to pounce and net the only goal of the match as Girona fell to their second loss in as many games.

It was a busy transfer deadline day in the Girona offices as the Albirrojos roped in three new faces in the late hours of Monday. Free signing from Fiorentina, Sebastián Cristóforo, who spent last season on loan at Eibar, will bring LaLiga experience in the midfield. Also, the front line has been bolstered with the loan signings of Nahuel Bustos and Yoel Bárcenas.

There’s one new face in the Leganés camp with centre back Javi Hernández joining from Real Madrid for a €500k fee.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 0 Leganes Wins, 2 Girona Wins, 4 Draws.
  • Girona were 2-0 winners at Butarque, the last time the sides met in March 2019 in LaLiga.
  • Leganes haven’t won any of the 8 meetings this century in league football – 4 draws, 4 defeats.

Leganes vs Girona Predictions

Score Prediction: Leganes 2-0 Girona

Combining Leganés’ strong home form with Girona’s abysmal start to the season, this should be three points for the Madrilenian side. Leganés raced to a three goal lead before half time in their last home game versus Cartagena and if they can reproduce any of that performance on Monday, it will be a difficult day for an already depleted Girona defence. Girona have also failed to score in four competitive fixtures including last season’s play-off Final and Butarque won’t be the easiest place to break that goal drought.
