Valencia vs Real Betis Preview

Valencia vs Real Betis team news

The late game on Saturday comes from Mestalla and it promises to be an entertaining one as two sides with defensive flaws meet. It has been a bit of a mixed bag from both Valencia and Real Betis so far this season but there are certainly some positives for their respective coaches to take from their opening league outings.

Valencia were surprise 1-0 winners away to Real Sociedad on Tuesday, a victory which briefly sent them to the top of LaLiga. While they rode their luck at times, overall it was a much more solid display from Javi Gracia’s side. Victory was sealed by an excellent team move with Jose Gaya’s expert delivery converted by Maxi Gomez. With the volume of players who left the club this summer, Valencia have to be happy with a return of 7 points from 4 games to start the campaign.

It’s two wins followed by two defeats for Real Betis. There were positives even in the loss to Real Madrid last weekend, but a 3-0 defeat at Getafe in midweek felt like two steps backwards for Los Verdiblancos. It was a display that could have been plucked from either of the previous two seasons with lots of possession but little in the way of cutting edge and defensive flaws evident at times.

Manuel Pellegrini will be hungry to see a positive response here as he takes his team to Mestalla with his honeymoon period now seemingly over.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Valencia Wins, 1 Betis Win, 2 Draws.
  • Valencia have won 3 of the last 4 meetings at Mestalla.
  • Betis last tasted success here with a 3-2 victory in 2016.
  • That is the Seville club’s only win in 19 visits to Valencia in all competitions.

Team News

Gabriel Paulista is still out for Valencia. We should see some rotation despite that win in midweek, with Goncalo Guedes likely to return on the left flank.

Aissa Mandi is suspended for Betis but Emerson is back from a ban of his own and should start at right back. Andres Guardado, Claudio Bravo and Diego Lainez are all injury doubts.

Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:

Domenech – Gaya, Diakhaby, Guillamon, Correia – Wass, Kondogbia – Guedes, Kang-In, Musah – Gomez (4-2-3-1)

Predicted Betis Starting Lineup:

Joel – Moreno, Bartra, Ruiz, Emerson – Carvalho, Guido Rodriguez – Fekir, Canales, Joaquin – Loren (4-2-3-1)

Valencia vs Real Betis Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-1 Real Betis

Valencia will take great heart from their performance and victory against a strong Real Sociedad side in midweek. Despite all the departures, they still just about have a spine of experienced players plus some genuinely talented youngsters which suggests their season may not be quite as bad as many were predicting. They could just edge this one against a Betis side that still looks a bit too easy to break down at times.
