Barcelona vs Sevilla Preview

The final game of the weekend in LaLiga takes place at Camp Nou and it’s a heavyweight clash between Barcelona and Sevilla. It’s the first time this season that teams who finished in the top four last term have met and it’ll be a real test of both team’s pedigree for the upcoming campaign.
The early signs at least from Koeman’s Barcelona are positive. They look much better off the ball and didn’t crumble on their travels in midweek, even when they were reduced to 10 men late in the First Half. A 3-0 victory over Celta Vigo, at a ground where they hadn’t won in over five years, can only be seen as a positive. If they can extend their 100% start here, there will be some genuine optimism again at Camp Nou as on paper this was by no means an easy start to the season.
Sevilla though will be out to burst Koeman’s bubble. They will be all too aware that their record away to the big guns and particularly on this ground has been very poor for a long time. At the very least they need to come here and be competitive if they are serious about pushing for a top three finish this term.
Julen Lopetegui’s men have also won both their opening two league fixtures. They needed late goals in both games though with a 3-1 comeback win at Cadiz last weekend following a 1-0 victory over Levante courtesy of a 92nd minute strike from Youssef En-Nesyri.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Barcelona Wins, 1 Sevilla Win, 1 Draw.
- Barcelona have won their last 6 at home to Sevilla, scoring 22 goals in the process.
- The sides last met in June, drawing 0-0 at the RSP.
- Sevilla lost 4-0 here in LaLiga last season, despite Barcelona being reduced to 9 men.
Team News
Clement Lenglet is suspended and with Samuel Umtiti sidelined, Barcelona are expected to hand Ronald Araujo a start in central defence. Neto will continue in goal with Ter Stegen still injured.
We may see some light rotation from Sevilla with Youssef En-Nesyri and Luuk de Jong competing for a starting role up front.
Predicted Barcelona Starting Lineup:
Neto – Alba, Pique, Araujo, Roberto – De Jong, Busquets – Fati, Coutinho, Griezmann – Messi (4-2-3-1)
Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:
Bono – Acuna, Carlos, Kounde, Navas – Rakitic, Fernando, Jordan – Ocampos, De Jong, Suso (4-3-3)
Barcelona vs Sevilla Predictions
Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Sevilla
There have been quite a lot of false dawns for Sevilla, at least in terms of thinking they are on the brink of becoming a side capable of competing at the very top of LaLiga. Good runs are often ended in emphatic fashion in away games at Camp Nou and the Bernabeu and while it looks unlikely they will get played off the park, an improved Barcelona do look capable of ending Sevilla’s 17 game unbeaten streak in LaLiga here.
