Almeria vs Sporting Gijon Preview
Perhaps the pick of the weekend games in the Spanish Segunda Division sees a hotly fancied Almeria side take on early leaders Sporting Gijon. While admittedly Almeria have only played one game to date, this is a meeting of the only two remaining 100% records in the division and victory for either would be a significant statement.
Almeria are the second favourites to win this league with the bookies, with only Espanyol seen as more likely candidates to emerge as champions. A combination of their wealthy owners and the huge fee received for the sale of young striker Darwin Núñez has given them the tools to make the kind of investments into this squad that other teams in this league can only dream of.
Their latest arrival was that of João Carvalho on loan from Nottingham Forest this week. The midfielder may have to be patient to get a chance in this XI though after Almeria put in a polished opening display, winning 2-0 away to Lugo in their first match of the new season last weekend.
Sporting Gijon meanwhile are three games into their season and it’s very much so far, so good for David Gallego’s side. The former Espanyol boss saw his side claim 1-0 wins against newly promoted opposition in the opening two matches, before a key 2-0 victory against Girona, who only narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight last term. They achieved that despite being reduced to 10 men in only the 15th minute and will be missing Gaspar Campos due to suspension here as a result.
