Granada are in Sweden on Thursday for the decisive UEFA Europa League play-off clash with Malmo. Once again, it’s a winner takes all clash with a place in the group stage on offer for the winners. Following an active summer of recruitment, it’s important that Granada do win this game and ensure they will have at least six more games in this competition, but this is significantly tougher opposition than what they’ve had to face so far in their debut European campaign.

Malmo are currently 8 points clear at the top of the Swedish Allsvenskan and look very much like they are on their way to winning another league title. This is also their 43rd season in European competition, in complete contrast to Granada. So far in the 2020/21 Europa League, it has been relatively plain sailing for Malmo with three straight wins to nil, including a 5-0 demolition of NK Lokomotiva in the last round.

Granada had it easy in the 2nd Qualifying Round against Teuta, winning 4-0 in Albania. They were pushed a bit harder last week by Georgian side Locomotive Tbilisi but were still more than worthy winners with Jorge Molina’s Stoppage Time strike securing a 2-0 winning margin.

Diego Martinez’s side still had a 100% record in all competitions heading into their third league game of the new campaign on Sunday, however they were brought back down to Earth with a real bump at the Wanda Metropolitano. A hungry Atletico Madrid side fired in six goals in a convincing victory, and Granada will really need to pick themselves up for this crucial play-off game.

Malmo vs Granada Predictions

Score Prediction: Malmo 1-1 Granada (Game goes to Extra Time & maybe Pens)

Granada are the favourites but Malmo will not fear them. The Swedish side have made the knockout stages in the Europa League in each of the last two seasons and have got plenty of experience of facing sides of a higher quality than they usually come up against in the Allsvenskan. Granada ought to be able to brush off that heavy weekend defeat and come strong again but this one has the potential to go the distance.
