Two sides who have been tipped to struggle in LaLiga this season meet at Ipurua on Wednesday in what might be seen as an early season relegation six pointer. Elche were well beaten in their opening game at the weekend while Eibar only have one point to show for their first three outings this season, suggesting it may be a tough campaign for the Basque club.

All their games have been close affairs but they were again denied a point late on by a late winning goal from Unai Lopez in the derby with Athletic on Sunday. Like many clubs, they’ve not been able to make any major signings this summer. Their only permanent addition was that of Polish winger Damian Kądzior but he has struggled to make much impression so far and was replaced at Half-Time at the weekend.

Eibar’s problems don’t compare to those of Elche though with the newly promoted side having to find several youth players to fill their subs bench in their opening LaLiga match at the weekend. They competed reasonably well in the 1st Half but were blown away after the break, losing 3-0 at home against a Real Sociedad side that had 27 attempts to their 5.

That was their first game under the guidance of Jorge Almirón and if he wasn’t already aware, he will now have no doubts that this is going to be a very difficult job. With the clock ticking to next week’s transfer deadline, it’s clear that Elche need fresh blood if they are going to be anything like competitive at this level.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Eibar Wins, 2 Elche Wins, 1 Draw.
  • This will be only the 3rd top flight meeting between the clubs.
  • Both meetings in the 2014/15 LaLiga season produced away wins. Eibar ultimately were granted a reprieve from relegation that year after Elche were demoted in their place due to financial problems at the Valencian club.
  • Elche have won on 4 of their last 6 visits to Ipurua overall, with most of those games in the Segunda Division.

Team News

Eibar are expected to go 4-4-2 in this game. With Sergi Enrich still an injury doubt, Quique Gonzalez and Kike Garcia are likely to lead the line.

Miguel Cifuentes is out injured for Elche but they don’t have any other injuries. They may also switch to 4-4-2 with Nino or Lucas Boye expected to come into the side in attack.

Predicted Eibar Starting Lineup:

Dmitrovic – Rodrigues, Bigas, Oliveira, Tejero – Inui, Alvarez, Exposito, Leon – Kike, Gonzalez (4-4-2)

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Badia – Josema, Verdu, Calvo, Josan – Fidel, Mfulu, Raul Guti, Morente – Milla, Boye (4-4-2)

Eibar vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Eibar 2-0 Elche

Elche were promoted with one of the lowest budgets in the Segunda Division last season and they were promoted very late, leaving them with limited time to prepare for life at this level. So far, we’ve not seen enough from them in the transfer market to suggest they even have much chance of staying up and their first performance was not a positive one. Eibar are likely to struggle too but they have considerably more top flight experience and should record their first win of the season here.
