The teams involved in last season’s play-offs finally kick off their Segunda Division campaigns this weekend. That means we will have a full fixture list for the first time this season and we’ll get our first glimpse of Almeria, one of the promotion favourites, as they travel to Galicia to take on Lugo.
This is Lugo’s 9th straight season at this level, an amazing feat for a club that had only previously spent one year in the top two leagues before winning promotion from the Segunda B in 2012. They’ve found it a bit difficult in recent years with a couple of close brushes with relegation but there is reason to be optimistic this term with a 2-1 win over recently relegated Leganes, a real boost to morale last weekend in their first home match of the new season.
Having played two games, they might just have a slight advantage in terms of match sharpness on Almeria who haven’t played competitively since losing out to Girona in the Segunda Division play-offs in August. They outspent the rest of the league combined last summer, so there was a sense of real disappointment that they failed to win promotion with a host of coaches coming and going during a turbulent campaign.
In terms of recruitment, there was at least some method in the madness with a huge profit netted on Darwin Núñez who has just joined Benfica for €24 million. His goals will be missed but that sale has enabled Almeria to dive back into the transfer market with several more major additions including Jose Carlos Lazo, Juan Gutierrez and Cristian Olivera.
