The traditional curtain-raiser to the European football season sees Champions League holders Bayern Munich and Europa League winners Sevilla clash in Budapest on Thursday. Perhaps surprisingly given the current rise in coronavirus infections across Europe, not to mention a recent surge in cases in the Hungarian capital, this game has been selected as a pilot event for fans to attend with around 20,000 expected to be inside the Puskas Arena.
Sevilla won the Europa League for the 6th time in August with a magnificent run seeing them past the likes of Wolves, Manchester United and Inter Milan to lift the trophy. They haven’t yet started the new season with their first LaLiga game being at Cadiz this coming Monday. That may put them at a slight disadvantage in terms of match sharpness here but Julen Lopetegui’s side can still take confidence from what is now a 21 game unbeaten streak in all competitions.
Bayern were worthy Champions League winners in August and few will need reminding of what happened the last time they took on Spanish opposition. The Bavarian giants started their Bundesliga campaign last weekend and just as they did when they met Barcelona in Lisbon, they scored 8 goals to demolish Schalke. Serge Gnabry netted a hat-trick in that match with new signing Leroy Sane also on target and this Sevilla defence will need to be at the very top of their game to keep the European champions quiet.
Since winning the Europa League, Sevilla have lost Ever Banega and Sergio Reguilon. However, as always they’ve made some shrewd signings and they could hand debuts to the likes of Oscar Rodriguez, Ivan Rakitic and Marcos Acuna in this match.
