Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid Preview

Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid predictions

Real Madrid play their first game of the 2020/21 season on Sunday evening and it’s a tough one, at Anoeta against a Real Sociedad side that finished 6th in LaLiga last term. La Real will be hoping to show that they mean business again and an early season victory over the champions would certainly do that.

Real Sociedad have had a very challenging few weeks though with a series of positive COVID tests for key players meaning it has been a difficult pre-season. Given the circumstances and the players they were missing, they’d probably have been content to take a point from their trip to Real Valladolid last weekend.

They will continue to monitor several players in the build-up to this game with David Silva thought to be better now and in line to make his debut, although perhaps only off the bench. This match may come too soon for Willian Jose but Mikel Oyarzabal is expected to be fit to start this one and that does give their attack a bit more cutting edge.

As for Real Madrid, they picked up a key but controversial win here only a few months back during that 10 game winning streak which ultimately delivered the league title. They’ve not played since exiting the Champions League in Manchester in August but Zinedine Zidane’s side will be hungry to set the tone for another league title challenge by trying to match the level they set during the run-in to the 2019/20 season when they were defensively very solid and had a knack for winning tight matches.

This match could potentially see Martin Odegaard feature for Real Madrid against the club he enjoyed a successful loan spell with last term. However a substitute’s role seems more likely for the Norwegian here. Los Blancos should be close to full strength with Eden Hazard the only undisputed starter expected to miss out.

Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Real Madrid

Following the COVID outbreak in their camp, not to mention the loss of Odegaard, it’d be unrealistic to expect Real Sociedad to hit the ground running this season. They weren’t even that convincing towards the end of last term so this fixture might not be quite as difficult as it looks for Real Madrid. While Zinedine Zidane’s side may be a bit rusty too, most of their players have at least seen some international action already this month and they look capable of winning the midfield battle here and most likely winning the game.
