Saturday marks the start of life in the Segunda Division for newly promoted Sabadell. The Catalan club didn’t feature on the opening weekend but would probably have welcomed the extra week off having emerged victorious from the Segunda B play-offs against Barcelona B in late July. They are in Madrid here to take on a Rayo Vallecano side that made a bright start to the season last weekend.
While last season ended on a bitter note with the acrimonious departure of Paco Jemez and failure to make the play-offs, there is a genuine sense of optimism about Rayo this term. Andoni Iraola is a highly regarded young coach who inspired Mirandes to a stunning Copa del Rey run in 2019/20 and he made a winning start to life in charge of Rayo with an impressive 1-0 victory away to recently relegated Mallorca last weekend.
Rayo will miss their home supporters who create a good atmosphere every week despite their continued dissatisfaction with president Martin Presa. However they were one of the few clubs to perform well at home post lockdown in this league, going unbeaten in Vallecas following the restart.
As for Sabadell, they are back in the second tier after five years in the Segunda B. Based in the province of Barcelona, they will have derbies against Espanyol to look forward to this season but this will be a stern early test of their credentials at this level.
They’ve made great progress since Antonio Hidalgo took charge in early 2019 but this is a big jump up and with only four signings so far, they are an inexperienced side at this level and they start the season as one of the favourites for relegation.

You can never be quite sure what to expect from newly promoted sides and a host of teams have come up from the Segunda B and immediately challenged in the top half of the Segunda, some even achieving back-to-back promotions. It seems unlikely Sabadell will fall into that category though and they will struggle to collect anything here against a Rayo side that started brightly in Palma last weekend.
