Castellon vs Malaga Preview
Segunda Division football returns to Castellón de la Plana on Saturday for the first time in a decade. Bolstered by a winning start on the road, CD Castellón will be optimistic they can make a positive beginning at the Nou Castàlia too in what is something of a glamour fixture against troubled Malaga.
Castellón have spent most of the past ten years below even the Segunda B – finishing 15th in the Tercera Division as recently as 2013/14. However their fanbase has stayed loyal with record-breaking crowds at that level and while those supporters won’t be immediately rewarded with the chance to watch their team in action here, they could have a big part to play later in the season.
Their return to the second tier couldn’t have started much better. A 98th minute strike from captain David Cubillas sealed a 2-1 win at Ponferradina on the opening weekend and the early signs are that Oscar Cano’s side are going to be competitive at this level.
As for Malaga, these continue to be uncertain times both on and off the pitch. They issued a statement only last month stating their intent to lay off the entire first team squad to help save the club from folding and this is shaping up to be a really difficult season for the Andalusian club.
Several players have left, but they have managed to secure a couple of fresh loan deals with José Matos and Jozabed both arriving from top flight teams this week. Those are welcome additions following a 2-0 defeat to Tenerife on the opening weekend.

The season may have begun but this Malaga squad may change considerably over the next few weeks before the window closes and that’s not exactly the ideal scenario for coach Sergio Pellicer as he tries to build a team that can be competitive in this league. Castellon may be newly promoted but they are in a more stable position having done their summer business much earlier and buoyed by a winning start on the road, they could make it two wins from two here on their return to the Segunda.
