Valencia vs Levante Preview

Valencia vs Levante

The Valencia derby is just about the standout fixture on an opening weekend in LaLiga that will see many of the big guns not feature. It was also these teams’ first game following the restart in June and while this gap has actually been shorter than that particular break, far more has happened and little of it has been positive, at least from a Valencia point of view.

The Mestalla exodus has seen the likes of Dani Parejo, Francis Coquelin, Rodrigo Moreno and Ferran Torres depart with no notable arrivals. Fans of Los Che, who have long since lost patience with owner Peter Lim, are furious. Even new boss Javi Gracia has spoken out this week at his frustration, suggesting promises may already have been broken even before his first game.

This then in theory is a good chance for Levante to record their first ever league victory at Mestalla. They’ve had a less turbulent summer with Paco Lopez still in charge while their squad has been bolstered by the arrival of a couple of young players from Real Madrid in the form of Dani Gómez and Jorge de Frutos. They did take a late point here when the sides met in June and would probably settle for a repeat despite the desire for that elusive away Valencia derby win.

This Valencia side is likely to have quite a youthful feel to it as a result of those major departures and one or two injury concerns. Lee Kang-In and Manu Vallejo are pushing for more regular roles but there is still a sprinkling of genuine quality across this Valencia team with the likes of Jose Gaya, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Maxi Gomez remaining at the club and set to start here. If Gracia can get them organised, they should still be competitive with the majority of teams in this league.

Valencia vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw

Valencia might be slightly more competitive than many are expecting this season but Gracia’s decision to speak out against the board on the eve of the new campaign doesn’t bode well for this being anything but a rocky road. Their eleven that takes to the field here will be weaker than the ones that finished last term but it’s still a team that should be able to at least avoid a home defeat against their city rivals. A repeat of the 1-1 from three months back could be on the cards.
