Real Oviedo will be kicking off their new season in the Carlos Tartiere by welcoming new boys FC Cartagena in the first round of fixtures in the Segunda División. This will be the first full season for manager Cuco Ziganda who arrived in February with Oviedo in the relegation places. He managed to keep them safe and finish in a respectable 15th and was rewarded with a contract extension until 2021.
The Blues have made a lot of signings with the likes of Edgar Gonazalez, Brazão, Cedric, Femenías and Rafa Mújica. These signings demonstrate the club’s intention to improve on last season’s lowly finish and Oviedo fans will be hoping the side can push on towards the top half and perhaps even a play-off push this year.
Looking to spoil the new look Real Oviedo will be new boys FC Cartagena. They have returned to the Segunda División after an eight year absence under young coach Borja Jiménez. They beat Atlético Baleares on penalties in the play offs and have since brought in some experienced players to try and help them stay in the league.
New additions David Simón, Simón Moreno, Julián Delmás, Pablo Clavería, Sergio Lozano and teenager Kleandro Lleshi will bolster the squad, while keeping hold of William may help them avoid a relegation battle at the end of the season. They haven’t had the best preseason but they will be hoping for a change of fortune when the competitive action starts.
