Alaves vs Real Betis Preview

Two sides who endured challenging 2019/20 seasons clash on the opening weekend of the new campaign. Both are under new management with Pablo Machin taking charge at Alaves and Manuel Pellegrini the new man at Betis. It’ll be very interesting to see which one can have the more immediate impact here after only a few weeks to work with their new players.

Alaves secured survival with a much needed victory at Betis in the penultimate round of fixtures last term. That came on the back of a really poor run though that had seen Asier Garitano dismissed and yet again the Basque side approach a new campaign under new leadership. The arrival of Machin will mean a shift to 3-5-2 with target man Joselu likely to be the focal point of their attack again.

We should see a more intricate approach from Betis but that was largely the idea last season although it never quite clicked under Rubi who lost his job shortly after the restart. Pellegrini is a big name coaching appointment but he hasn’t exactly been rewarded with any big name signings. A few relatively low-key arrivals so far at the Benito Villamarin are aimed at tightening up a leaky defence.

Claudio Bravo may make his debut in goal for the visitors but otherwise it’s likely to be a familiar looking lineup here. Borja Iglesias had a bitterly disappointing first season in Seville but looks set to get the nod in attack for the visitors.

Alaves are expected to give a debut to Rodrigo Battaglia, signed on loan from Sporting, in midfield.

Pablo Machin is quite a bold appointment from Alaves and his arrival might just spark some life into a team that is normally pretty solid at home. They might just edge it against a Betis side that really needed freshening up a bit more than this. It feels as though similar kinds of problems will remain in the green and white half of Seville unless they can do some solid late business.
