Leganes vs Las Palmas Preview

Leganes are back in the Segunda Division after their four year stay in the top flight came to a heartbreaking end on the final day of last season. They did brilliantly to even take the fight to that stage to be fair, but this marks something of a new era for Los Pepineros with Las Palmas the first visitors of the season to Butarque.

There’s also a new coach at the helm for the South Madrid club. Javier Aguirre was the man who nearly masterminded the most incredible of escape acts at the end of last term. The Mexican has stepped aside though with former Depor and Girona boss José Luis Martí taking over.

While they are by no means the biggest club in this league, Leganes do look like they will be strong promotion contenders having brought in plenty of fresh recruits. The likes of Borja Baston, Robert Ibáñez, Luis Perea and Gaku Shibasaki should all be capable of pushing Lega towards the top end of this league and should go some way to finding a cure for their goalscoring woes last term.

As for Las Palmas, they are hoping to improve on last season’s 9th place finish. They are still under the guidance of Pepe Mel. It has been a slightly quieter summer in Gran Canaria with the hope clearly being that a stable approach can see them continue to build. They have lost defender Mauricio Lemos to Fenerbahce but the squad is bolstered by the return of a few players from loan deals.

Las Palmas aren’t exactly away day specialists, with just one road win in 2020 so far. That did come against high-flying Almeria though and they may just relish the underdogs tag here.

Leganes vs Las Palmas Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Leganes

With a new coach and a host of new players, Leganes may take a bit of time to gel but overall they look to have a squad capable of battling for promotion. Unlike many teams who come down, they weirdly take a bit of momentum into this game too having done so well at the end of last term and the players that do remain will be hungry to regain their top flight status in 2021.

It’s likely to be tight as matches at this level often are, but Lega now have one or two individuals capable of making the difference in the final third and that could be vital here.
