It’s all to play for at La Romareda on Sunday night as Zaragoza and Elche face off with a place in the Segunda Division play-off Final at stake for the winners. There were no goals in the 1st Leg in the Valencian Community on Thursday so we start level here.
While only drawing the home leg of a two-legged tie is usually seen as not enough, Elche have plenty of reason to be happy with how Thursday’s game ended up. They were reduced to 10 men after just 30 minutes after Jonathas saw red but competed admirably after that to ensure Zaragoza failed to make their man advantage count.
The absence of supporters and the poor home records of both sides this season also suggested that home advantage might not count for much in this tie so Elche will probably be content enough to be heading north having at least not conceded an away goal.
They will take confidence from some of Zaragoza’s recent displays at La Romareda too. Víctor Fernández’s side lost 5 straight home games immediately following the restart as their automatic promotion dream faded away. They stopped the rot by seeing off Ponferradina on the final day but it’s still fairly shocking home form to take into a game of this magnitude.
Elche have hardly set the world on fire either of late and have only won once on the road since the restart. That was against bottom club Racing Santander. They’ve managed to score in 5 of their last 6 road fixtures though and that could be significant given the value of an away goal here against a Zaragoza side that is missing top scorer Luis Suarez following his return to Watford.

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw (Elche to progress)
Neither of these sides really look like they are strong enough to compete in the top flight next season in truth and it feels more likely that the promoted team will come from the other tie. Overall we can see Elche just sneaking through here with Zaragoza still not really looking anything like the team that impressed so much in the first couple of months of 2020 before Spain went into lockdown.
