Inter Milan vs Getafe Preview

European football is back on Wednesday night and the first Spanish team in action is Getafe. They initially refused to travel to virus-stricken northern Italy for their glamour tie with Inter Milan way back in March. It was a decision which on reflection they deserve great credit for at a time when Europe’s football bodies were struggling to come to any decisions on how to react to the start of the pandemic.

Almost five months on from when the original tie should have been played, Getafe and Inter finally meet in what is now a one-off game which will take place in Gelsenkirchen. The victors will progress into a Quarter-Final, most likely to be against Bayer Leverkusen next week.

Getafe would have really fancied their chances in this tie the first time around. They headed into it on the back of a famous victory over a talented Ajax side in the round of 32 and were full of confidence with their league form also strong as Jose Bordalas’ men pushed for Champions League qualification. The interruption to the season though had a damaging effect on Getafe who won just 1 of their final 12 games in LaLiga and were controversially pipped to European qualification on the final day of the season with a series of decisions going against them in defeat at Levante.

Inter meanwhile also returned to domestic action in June. While they were pipped to the title by Juventus, it was still quite a strong end to the season from Antonio Conte’s men who lost just 1 of their final 13 Serie A fixtures, winning all of their last 3 to nil. Their domestic campaign ended as recently as Saturday and it’ll be interesting to see whether that is an advantage or disadvantage for Italian sides this week, with three in action against LaLiga teams who finished their season over a fortnight ago.

Inter Milan vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: 1-0 Inter

This Getafe side certainly won’t go down without a fight but given their unimpressive league form, it’s hard to see them getting the better of an Inter side that is possibly as strong as it has been for close to a decade. The Italians won’t find it easy to break down Bordalas’ Getafe but they have that touch of genuine quality in the final third that could make all the difference on a night like this.
