Villarreal vs Eibar Preview

Villarreal clinched Europa League qualification in midweek and there’s not an awful amount riding on this game against an Eibar side that have already guaranteed their survival. The Yellow Submarine could yet finish in 5th or 6th but both places offer direct entry into the group stage of the Europa League.

The Yellow Submarine have been the most improved side in LaLiga this season. In fairness, they didn’t exactly set the bar very high as they stumbled to a 14th place finish last season, following five straight top six finishes. Nothing quite clicked last term but they’ve been better in virtually every department this time around with a much changed defence suring things up at the back while Gerard Moreno has found his feet and has offered a much more consistent goal threat up top.

They secured European qualification on Thursday despite losing 2-1 to Real Madrid as a few other results went their way. That was actually their 3rd defeat in 4 matches but a really strong run of form immediately following the restart, put them in a strong position to clinch a return to European football and they will look forward to more Europa League nights at the Ceramica next term.

As for Eibar, they are celebrating having secured a 7th straight season at this level. They really have been one of the sides that coped better with the interruption to the season due to COVID-19 and have come back with 15 points from 10 matches since the restart, a record only 6 sides can better.

Eibar head into this one following back-to-back wins over Real Valladolid and Espanyol. This will be tougher but even if they win it, they cannot climb any more positions with their current 13th place as good as it is going to get.

We will have LaLiga predictions and previews for every game on the final matchday plus six LaLiga SmartBank previews for the Monday games which sees the second tier end.

Villarreal vs Eibar Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Villarreal

Villarreal have looked a bit more vulnerable defensively in recent weeks with 9 goals conceded in their last 4 games, following on from a really impressive run where they looked very tough to break down. Eibar may fancy they can have some joy in the final third as a result but with only 1 point away to the current top eight this season, it’s hard to see them getting a result.
