Granada vs Athletic Bilbao Preview

This is a repeat of the Copa del Rey Semi-Final earlier in the season which Athletic narrowly won on away goals. That should have given them a great chance to reach Europe via the cup but COVID-19 had other plans for us all. Athletic and fellow finalists Real Sociedad agreed to postpone the cup final until a later date, meaning 7th place is now good enough for Europa League football.

Athletic are now out of the running for that after a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Leganes on Thursday night. That was a major blow for everyone in Bilbao and quite unlike them, it is 3 straight home defeats that have put pay to their chances of returning to Europe. Gaizka Garitano’s side do at least still have that cup final to come but quite when that will ultimately be played is anyone’s guess with talk of a second wave of the coronavirus this week following a rise in cases again in Spain.

As for Granada, their remarkable first season back at this level continues to go from strength to strength. They head into their final game with a genuine chance of clinching Europa League football. Victory here would take them onto 56 points, which would currently be enough for 6th place. With the likes of Valencia and Real Sociedad above them having really tough final games, there’s every chance that victory would see Diego Martinez’s side into Europe.

3 wins from their last 5 games have kept their dream alive and with a 50% win ratio at Los Carmenes in LaLiga this season, they have no reason not to fancy this.

We will have LaLiga predictions and previews for every game on the final matchday plus six LaLiga SmartBank previews for the Monday games which sees the second tier end.

Granada vs Athletic Bilbao Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Granada

Athletic found it tough going here when they visited Granada in the Copa del Rey earlier in the season, losing on the night but still advancing on away goals. This will be tough too against a Granada side that is still playing with so much passion and intensity, not to mention more quality than they often get credit for. Athletic’s defeat to lowly Leganes in the week would have hit them hard and it’s difficult to fancy them here with nothing really riding on it for the Basques any more.
