Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad Preview

This is a really big game for Real Sociedad who travel to the Wanda Metropolitano hoping to secure European qualification. At the time the season restarted, La Real were actually above Atleti in the standings but Diego Simeone’s side have since chalked up a huge 14 point advantage meaning this is by no means the top four showdown it might have been.

Atleti do still have work to do in order to secure 3rd rather than 4th place. There is a financial incentive for doing that and they’ll also be motivated by the opportunity to head into the Champions League next month still unbeaten since lockdown.

Their return of 24 points from 10 games since the restart is only bettered by Real Madrid and they’ve shown no sign of letting up even after clinching a top four finish. They beat another European hopeful in midweek as they won 2-0 at Getafe, with Marcos Llorente who has been one of LaLiga’s standout performers over the past month again on target.

As for Real Sociedad, they’ve not managed to live up to the high standards they set for themselves prior to the break. A return of just 9 points from 10 games in this final chunk of the season is the 6th worst record in LaLiga but they have performed a bit better over the past fortnight to get their European push back on track.

4 points from games against Villarreal and Sevilla so far this week have really helped out but defeat here would leave them relying on other results if they want to be playing in the Europa League in 2020/21. A draw would be enough to secure their passage into Europe but it could see them slide down to 7th which would mean they’d have to take part in the qualifying rounds, which clearly they’d rather avoid ahead of what is already going to be a very congested season due to the late start.

We will have LaLiga predictions and previews for every game on the final matchday plus six LaLiga SmartBank previews for the Monday games which sees the second tier end.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Atleti

Atleti have looked strong over the past few weeks and with the Champions League on the horizon, places are still up for grabs in Diego Simeone’s starting XI so we should see no let-up from Los Rojiblancos here. As good as Real Sociedad have been for most of this season, they’ve not looked as impressive in the final third since the restart and they will struggle to open up this Atleti defence. A home win looks the most likely outcome and that will leave La Real sweating on other results as far as their Europa League ambitions are concerned.
